Radio System FAQ
How can I set up a 6-servo glider to use outer ailerons, inner ailerons and flaps or spoilers?
The following information is reprinted with the permission of the author, David Wenzlick.
NOTE: Since the 2 flap servos share ch-3 on a Y-harness you must use a reversed servo. The flaps will have to be mechanically neutralled after installation.
Channel Assignments
| CH | Servo |
| 1 | Right Outer Aileron |
| 2 | Right V-Tail* |
| 3 | Both Left and Right Flap |
| 4 | Left V-Tail* |
| 5 | Right Inner Aileron |
| 6 | Left Inner Aileron |
| 7 | Left Outer Aileron |
| 8 | Battery input |
| *May also be used with conventional tail |
Following these parameters allows you to operate the wing as follows: For cruising, the ailerons are coupled and the flaps stay at neutral. For thermaling, the flaps and inner ailerons are cambered and the inner ailerons become inactive as ailerons and only the outer ailerons are used for banking. These settings will also allow the entire wing to be reflexed for speed.
Start, Speed, Butterfly etc. will function nearly normal. (Flaps now follow the throttle stick instead of ch's 5&6.)
When launching, the entire wing can be dialed in to your prefered launch settings. During the zoom, the entire wing can be reflexed per your settings. During normal cruise, the flaps are at neutral and the inner and outer ailerons are coupled at your prefered percentages. You can have the inner ailerons move less than the outer ailerons if you desire (emulating how some full scale sailplanes function) by using the settings in the Ail-Flp mix. When you enter a thermal, throw Switch E to uncouple the ailerons, (only outers now active) and camber the inner ailerons and flaps. The camber amount can be preset to an offset value or use the ch 8 knob to fine tune the desired camber but still have it activated on the Switch E.
I will only mention the functions needed to set up the 6 servo wing. Reversing, expo, etc. are normal.
Basic menu:
- Select Glid 2 FLP mode
- Set the basic reversing etc. if needed
In the Advanced menu:
- Activate the FLPTRM but set the value to 0% This de-activates the ch -6 knob.
- Activate AI-DIF and set percentages to your choice on the outer ailerons.
- Activate AI-FL This will couple the inner and outer ailerons when you select Switch E. Set the percentages. The choice of using Switch E cannot be changed but you can select which position to have it activate the mix. I selected "UP" for this example.
- V-TAIL (if required). Activate end set servos as needed.
- I use PMIX-1 for Aileron to Rudder coupling. Remember to LINK "ON" the mix if your model has a V-tail.
- PMIX-2 is used for cambering both inner ailerons. Activate. CH8 Master. CH6 Slave -20 % for starters. Link "ON". Switch E "DOWN" Dial pot 8 to fine tune the amount of camber. Use Switch E to turn it on and off. After I test fly and I know how much camber I want, I will go back into this mix and make OFS the master and set the camber using the percentage there. Now I don't have to worry about the ch 8 knob being moved.
- PMIX-3 is used to camber the flaps on ch-3 since the link function in PMIX-2 will not link to the throttle channel. Activate. CH8 master. ABK slave. +10% for starters.
- PMIX-4 is used to drop the flaps to the launch setting when using the START switch. (Switch G DOWN) Activate. OFS master. ABK slave. +50% for starters. Switch G "DOWN". Now when you use launch presets in the START function the flaps will drop to your preset amount.
- PMIX-5 is used to reflex the flaps when using the SPEED switch. (Switch G "UP") Activate. OFS master. ABK slave. -10% for starters. Switch G "UP". Now when you use the SPEED function the flaps will reflex to your set amount.
- START Activate and set servo percentages as required.
- SPEED Activate and set servo percentages as required.
- BFLY Activate and set servo percentages as required. Remember the flaps will follow the Butterfly function because they are plugged into the throttle position already. If Switch A is up, moving the throttle will only move the flaps. With Switch A down the entire Butterfly function will be active.
This should get you in the air and then you can fine tune to your preferences.
